TL;DR

Type the following command into Terminal:

The Full Version

I noticed recently that the problems with Khmer vowels appear again in new versions of Linux distros, including
the popular Ubuntu and its derivatives like elementaryOS
which I’m currently using. The vowels in question are:

Shift + A
⇒ ាំ (Srak Arm)

Shift + Semicolon (;)
⇒ ោះ (Srak Orss)

Shift + V
⇒ េះ (Srak Ess)

Comma (,)
⇒ ុំ (Srak Om)

Shift + Comma (,)
⇒ ុះ (Srak Oss)

The problem is that, instead of outputting the intended vowels, square block or nothing at all is outputted.

A widely-shared workaround to resolve this problem is to add entries for these vowels in <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">/usr/share/X11/locale/$LANG/Compose:

#
# Khmer digraphs
#
<U17ff> : "ាំ"
<U17fe> : "ោះ"
<U17fd> : "េះ"
<U17fc> : "ុំ"
<U17fb> : "ុះ"

NOTE: At the time of writing it seems that most distros already include these bindings.

Plus, you need to fallback to the legacy input method xim, which respects the aforementioned Compose file, by
adding the following line in <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">/etc/environment:

GTK_IM_MODULE=xim

All is well and good, right? Unfortunately, no. As of late, most Linux distros are shipped with the popular ibus as
the default input method, and the current version of ibus (1.5.17) does not support multi-character Compose key
output (the 5 Khmer vowels are multi-character), so the previous method no longer works even with <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
in the <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">/etc/environment
file.

A solution to this is to force the default input method of the system to xim:

im-config -n xim

I found out that just using this command will make the Khmer Unicode compose key bindings work again in GTK
applications without any need to modify the <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">/etc/environment
file.

Wait, only GTK applications? Yes, QT applications still don’t seem to work correctly with multi-character Compose
key output, at least not the applications I tested with:

VLC Media Player

VirtualBox

TeamViewer

WPS Office

Strangely, even forcing <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">QT_IM_MODULE=xim
doesn’t help either.

Please keep in mind that xim is very old and will most likely be completely removed in the future as other input
methods are more stable. That being said, until ibus gains support for multi-character Compose key output, xim is
still a valid band-aid to this annoying problem. In the meantime, you can also take a look at other input methods
like uim which has better legacy support with xim and multi-character Compose key output. I tested uim and it seems
to work out of the box with the 5 Khmer vowels. The only problem is that it’s not included by default in most
distros, so you have to install it manually.

Hopefully this will make your Linux adventure with Khmer Unicode better, and if you have a different method to make
Khmer Unicode support works better on Linux, please let me know.

Khmer UI was first introduced in Windows Vista and has served since then as the default Khmer fonts for the Windows User Interface.

Khmer UI

Due to the its difficult legibility, the team behind Khmer Unicode (NiDA) introduced Khmer fonts fixer for Windows Vista and Windows 7 (which should also work for Windows 8) in order to replace Khmer UI fonts with Khmer OS Sytem font.

However, in Windows 8, this method doesn't work anymore most likely due to Microsoft's deeper integration of system fonts. In fact, Microsoft has used another font which is actually a combination of three typefaces: Thai, Lao and Khmer. The result font file is called Leelawadee UI (which can be found in the Fonts folder in Windows).

Therefore, to replace Khmer UI typeface with Khmer OS System typeface, I tried modifying Khmer OS System with respect to the three font files of Leelawadee UI (LeelawUI.ttf, LeelUIsl.ttf, LeelaUIb.ttf). After that, all there is to do is installing the three modified fonts (the process will ask to replace the three existing fonts), logging out, and you'll see the results after logging in.

I don't know see how this affects the Thai and Lao typefaces for the UI because they were not included in Khmer OS System font, but I haven't see any noticeable errors by typing Thai in Chrome's address bar (which should use UI fonts).

I provide the link below for all those who would like to change Khmer default fonts on Windows 8.1. What will Microsoft do with Khmer fonts in the next Windows? Only they know...
I'm sure this brought joys to all Khmer people from every corner of the world.

And I, an iPhone user turned amateur themer/developer, has initially started making Khmer fonts for the jailbroken iOS 7 because I saw very few Khmer fonts on the iOS platform whereas English fonts for iOS were in the hundreds or maybe thousands. So I decided to make a change. So far, I've modified/made several Khmer fonts for iOS 7 and two Khmer fonts for iOS 7.1.x (since it's gotten harder to port Khmer fonts to iOS on this version due to Apple's change of how the system renders fonts). I hosted all these packages on my MyRepospace repository: http://cydia.myrepospace.com/fidele007

Here on iOS 8 (jailbroken), I've made many more. You can see below the results of my work. All the fonts listed below are available on ModMyi, one of the official repository on Cydia, under my pseudonym fidele007. I've made it even easier for the users by integrating my fonts to the app Bytafont 2 so that you can easily change fonts without having to un-install other fonts.

You can all use these fonts free of charge.
Most of Khmer people, as seen nowadays, try to get rid of headaches at the first sign of symptoms by swallowing loads of drugs acquired from pharmacies. Many of them don’t know or care whether or not these drugs can do as much damage to our health as they help. Medicine is like a two-sided blade, in other words it can be advantageous and disadvantageous at the same time. That’s why natural remedies can help you better in dealing with this nagging malady. Here are some of them:

Eat something high in protein.

Wash it away. First take a hot shower and then take a cold shower right after that. Why does it work? When you first take the hot shower, your blood veins will open wide, making your headache even worse. However, after the cold shower is taken, your blood veins will contract and your pain will be eased.

Put a crushed ice into your mouth. This is not suggested for elderly, though.

Think it away. You can do it by closing your eyes and imagine that you’re at a beach on a sunny day. The sun is so hot that it starts giving heat to your arms. By picturing this in your mind, your blood veins in your brain will send the heat down to your hands, making your headache cease to hurt.

Press it away. Headaches can be cured by putting fingers on both sides of your temple and start massaging it. Mind you, this must be done on BOTH SIDES. On the other hand, you can massage the back of your neck or the tip of your toes.

All these tactics described above are just a few tricks to help your with your headache without costing you the disadvantages of using medicines. Remember, these techniques vary from one person to another; one that works for a person might not work for another person. So, you should check out all of these tricks out and see which one works well with you.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08705890668594322117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5085380903667380920.post-27571967341783541862009-06-16T07:45:00.004+02:002015-01-27T10:20:57.121+01:00Life's ChoicesLife's Choices is a comic book depicting the way of Cambodia students studying in high school, covering most of important issues including corruption, love, living standards and so on.

Corruption: This is probably one of the most important factors which hinder the development of the country since this has a strong impact on the government. What's more, I'm afraid corruption starts from the top, to be precise leaders of this country and everyone else. I must say, even me makes corruption, although not as strong as those elites. So, if Cambodia is ever to be developed, this must be reduced to a minimum rate immediately.

Tradition & Superstition: Khmer people are mostly superstitious or primitive. Some ancient beliefs and traditions which are not suitable for nowadays era should be changed. Furthermore, almost all foreigners claim the same thing that Cambodian people are highly superstitious. Moreover, the Khmer holds many festivals and other religious rituals which might be the problem for the development of Cambodia.

Human Resource: This is what makes a country going. If human resources are down, there can be no way that a country can develop, and this is what is happening in Cambodia right now. Because of corruption, students who graduate from universities are not qualified enough for employment. Most people say, ‘Quantity with no quality.’

Individual: Imagine a country full of bad people with only one good man. How can this country develop? Suppose in a country with wise people unneeded and only corrupted people are needed. That’s why every single person must stand up together in order to make a change to this corrupted country. Only one person cannot make any different, only a bunch of people can push the power of change to activate. So, every Khmer people must not wait for others to act first. If you wait, other people will also wait and see.

Well, all in all, these are just statements. It cannot do anything but to help your mind to reconsider your activities nowadays whether you love your country or not. Remember, if you can’t help develop your country, don’t say you’re a real Khmer. I’m not, but I’ll try to become one. That’s my goal.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08705890668594322117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5085380903667380920.post-89680359335364566192009-05-27T07:11:00.003+02:002015-01-27T10:21:26.171+01:00Chicken or the Egg?This is a controversial topic that has brought many scientists headache because they couldn’t find a reasonable explanation as to which one of them came first, the chicken….or the egg? This matter was first brought up as early as 46 A.D., a long time ago. If you think about it, a chicken needed to hatch from an egg, but an egg needed to be laid by a chicken as well. It’s just like an endless circle of happenings.
Fortunately, a group of scientists have claimed they found an answer. It’s the egg. It can be explained like this. The first chicken to be born on earth must have hatch from an egg, and the egg couldn’t have been laid by chickens, so it must have been laid by other animals which have the same DNA as chickens we now see these days since, according to science, no matter what form any animal might transform itself into, its DNA remains intact. So, that might be the case. However, I think there might be some loopholes here. How could two animals (male and female) other than chickens breed an egg with a chicken in it? Maybe those two unknown animals were the same species as chickens, which explain why their DNA and the chickens’ are the same. Well, that is my speculation.
He made another request to the world-renowned novels' author, J.K. Rowling, in order to allow the the translation of the second book to be published for the sake of Khmer kids. Generously, the author did agree to the request. Now that the permission is confirmed, the publication of the second book of Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Chamber Secrets, is going to be published in no time, even though the certain publication date is unknown.
Overall, Bernie Krisher is a real help for our Cambodian generations despite the fact that Khmer is not his nationality. I can't wait to read that book!
And why do we yawn just because we see someone else does. Overall, what is the meaning of yawning, and how does it happen?

Surprisingly, to scientists, this is still a mystery. However, scientists claim that yawning is not because of boredom. There are some hypothesis made by various scientists. Some say that we yawn because our body needs oxygen. That explains the fact why we open our mouth widely so that the lung can get more oxygen, which leads to the increasing rate of heartbeat, creating more oxygen in the bloodstream. Yet again, this theory is skeptical since we do not usually yawn when we're doing exercise, for exercising needs lots of oxygen as well.

Therefore, the answer is yet to be found. What does only one simple word can make it so complicated for scientists? Let's share what you think. I hope WE can find the answer!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08705890668594322117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5085380903667380920.post-59199959719714300342009-05-02T15:29:00.004+02:002009-05-02T15:57:45.785+02:00Q&A About Swine Flu

What is Swine Flu?

Swine Flu is a kind of influenza virus named H1N1. It was originally occurred only between pigs from the infected one to other pigs that it gets into contact with. However, somehow this virus was able to get itself transmitted to humans as well. It’s worth note-taking that this virus has already happened a long time ago, and there are also different types of Swine Flu such as H1N1, H2N2, H3N2 and H3N1.

Why is it so feared right now?

The scientists are now afraid that this Swine Flu virus is able to infect from one human to another. Why? The case may be that a person who contains the virus got the common flu, so the Swine Flu virus can combine itself with the common flu virus and become a new and more dangerous virus which can be transmitted to another human body. If that’s the case, then there is no question why infected people are increasing remarkably. Moreover, it is founded out that this new virus has a combination of three distinct genes – human, bird and pig.

What are the Swine Flu symptoms?

The symptoms of Swine Flu are quite similar to those of common flu, including headache, high body temperature, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing or runny nose, etc.

Is Swine Flu treatable?

I must say the answer is unknown yet, but now we have four antiviral drugs which may help make the disease milder. Those are oseltamivir, zanamivir, amantadine and rimantadine. However, it is said that these drugs must be taken immediately after the first sign disease to ensure its effects.

What should we do to prevent ourselves from the virus?

Cleanliness is the most important we can do right now, and stay away from pigs if you can! Wash your hand often and go to the hospital as soon as the symptoms said above occurred to you in an unusual way.

It’s worth realizing that Swine Flu now reaches Level 5 of the six-level scale made out by World Health Organization (WHO). Be extra careful!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08705890668594322117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5085380903667380920.post-86093518483060322282009-05-01T08:58:00.006+02:002009-05-01T09:19:54.411+02:00Chinese Pascal's TriangleThere is a renowned Pascal's Triangle which makes up the formula (a+b)^n. However, 300 years before Pascal found it, there was already a discoverer of this system, the Chinese. Unfortunately, this discovery was ignored until Pascal found it and the credit was gotten by Pascal instead, as resulted in the system name. The Chinese Pascal's Triangle is known as Yanghui Triangle. One of the most timeless laws of
success holds that all things are created twice: first on
the picture screen of one's imagination and then in reality.

Those people that create rich, fulfilling lives regularly
flex their imaginations and visualize a better future. By
constantly holding that vision in their mind's eye and
taking action to make it a reality, they overcome their
circumstances and create the life of their dreams.

Create a 'Success Mastermind'. Just as five fingers can
achieve more than one, getting together with a group of like
minded achievers and pooling your knowledge and success
strategies will bring you to your goals much faster.

Set a time every week and meet with your success mastermind
Share your goals and dreams. Share your frustrations as well
as techniques that have worked for you. Support each other.
Encourage each other. Celebrate even the smallest of
successes as you advance confidently towards a better life.

Love Failure. Failure is the highway to success. Every
successful person has faced endless failures and encountered
adversity. However, rather than giving up and moving on to
another easier pursuit, they persisted. They believed in
themselves and in the importance of what they were doing.
They had the wisdom to know that failure is an essential
teacher. From failure, we grow wise. Failure teaches us how
to win. Without failure, there would be no success.

Get a Coach. The Law of Duplication says that if you do the
same things that someone else did, in the same way that they
did them, you are certain to get the same results in your
life. Whether you are trying to build a great business or
grow a great family, get a mentor.

Find someone who has 'been there, done that.' Why reinvent
the wheel? Use your mentors' own experiences to shorten your
learning curve. Learn from their mistakes and let their
pasts serve you.

Mentors need not be alive. Becoming a serious student of
great people who have lived before us by reading their
biographies and analyzing their personal habits will work
just as well as any association with a living achiever.

Play the Numbers. Success is a numbers game. Smart
salespeople will tell you that the average sale is closed on
the fifth try and yet most people give up after the first.
Similarly, the more times you try to succeed, the closer you
get to success.

The more times you ask for something, the greater the
probability that you will get it. Take more chances, seize
more opportunities and take more action. Just as the farmer
who plants more seeds reaps a richer harvest, you will
attract much more success into your own life.

Work Hard. Successful people will tell you that the harder
they work, the luckier they get. In this age of the quick
fix, where people buy creams to slim their thighs and pop
pills to lose weight, one timeless truth remains, hard work
always produces its just rewards.

No undertaking can ever be successful without patience and
hard work. Have the character strength to put in the effort
required to reach your dreams. Remember, the harder you are
on yourself, the easier life will be on you.

Have Written Goals. Goals that are not written down are
impotent. By writing out your goals, they become embedded
on your subconscious mind and crystallized in your
consciousness.

Write out your goals on 3X5 cards and post them next to you
bed, on your bathroom mirror, on the dashboard in your car
and next to your computer at the office. Never lose sight of
your goals. Never let the busyness of the everyday allow you
to forget about your life goals. By thinking about them
constantly and acting on them daily, you will steadily
create the brilliant life you know in your heart you
deserve.

Master Your Moods. Just as you are not your thoughts, you
are not your moods. Effective people don't let their moods
get in the way of their progress. If they feel tired, they
keep on working. If they feel disappointed, they laugh it
off and keep chasing the dream. If they grow fearful, they
act on their fear. By overcoming their moods, they liberate
their inner power and grow stronger by the day.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08705890668594322117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5085380903667380920.post-45439774010390614882009-05-01T08:09:00.001+02:002009-05-01T08:30:13.781+02:00The First and Second World War
Many wars have occurred since the beginning of humanity. Each of them always brought endless pain and sorrow to everybody living in between and proclaimed a lot of people’s lives. However, the most tragic and greatest wars of all time are the First and Second World War.

First of all, I would like to describe about World War I. How come there was World War I? The main cause that provoked the First World War was due to the conflict between new powerful countries and old powerful countries over the economic markets. The war occurred right after the death of the Hungarian royal heir in Sarajevo on 28th June 1914. There were two groups divided in this fierce war. The first one was called the Allied Powers, which included United Kingdom, France and Russia. Besides, the other group was named as the Central Powers, including the United States, Germany and Japan. The war went on and on for four years. There were lots of deaths, and this war brought Europe an enormous disaster. Homes, factories, school and other buildings were almost completely destroyed. About ten millions of soldiers were killed in this war, not including the amount of dead civilians. In 1918, in order to end this war, representatives from each country gathered together and made up the Peace Conference. This meeting was held in Paris, and there were 32 countries participated. They decided to sign on the Peace Treaty, and then the war was over.

Nevertheless, on 2nd September 1939 the Germany, under the governing of Adolf Hitler, announced a second war, known as World War II. Hitler’s ambition was to rule the entire world. Other countries that didn’t prepare for the war were attacked and defeated in the meantime by Germany. Germany went on to combat with other countries remained. Soon, the United States decided to cooperate with United Kingdom and Soviet Union so as to defeat Germany. After six years of ruthless war, the German army became weaker and weaker, and so did its partner, Japan. In 1945, the Germany and Japan were defeated completely. Meanwhile, it was also the same year the United Nation was born, on 24th of October. In this World War II, there were even more great losses than the previous one, due to advanced technology and modern weapons. Several cities were absolutely ruined and deserted…like ghost cities. Over 55 million people lost their lives!

As a result, the First World War (1914-1918) and the Second World War (1939-1945) cost many people’s lives. Therefore, WAR can only bring tears to us. Only PEACE can bring the world a bright future. Only PEACE makes the whole world a beautiful place to live in.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08705890668594322117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5085380903667380920.post-18069977258110501282009-04-28T12:39:00.002+02:002009-04-28T12:43:41.314+02:00A Political Joke

Phone Calls from Hell

Queen Elizabeth, George Bush and Hun Sen died and went to Hell.

Queen Elizabeth said, 'I miss England, I wanna call England and see how everybody is doing there...' And here we are, authored by Geoff Ryman, came the first wonderful Khmer novel ever to be written in English language. Have it a go!

Book Review:
The King's Last Song is an immersive novel of epic proportions that interweaves two Cambodian stories: Archeologist Luc Andrade discovers an ancient manuscript inscribed on gold leaves but is kidnapped — and the manuscript stolen — by a faction still loyal to the ideals of the brutal Pol Pot regime. Andrade's friends, an ex-Khmer Rouge agent and a young motoboy, embark on a trek across Cambodia to rescue him. Meanwhile, Andrade, bargaining for his life, translates the lost manuscript for his captors. The result is a glimpse into the tremendous and heart-wrenching story of King Jayavarman VII: his childhood, rise to power, marriage, interest in Buddhism, and the initiation of Cambodia's golden age. As Andrade and Jayavarman's stories interweave, the question becomes whether the tale of ancient wisdom can bring hope to a nation still suffering from the violent legacy of the last century.

Praise from others:
* "An unforgettably vivid portrait of Cambodian culture past and present." —Booklist (starred review)

"Ryman's brilliant new novel, "The King's Last Song," is permeated by the theme of salvation through destruction. In parallel narratives, Ryman reveals the (imagined) memoir of 12th-century ruler and Cambodia's greatest king, Jayavarman VII, and presents the history of 20th-century Cambodia, a story of endless and eviscerating civil war. In so doing, he vividly creates a portrait of individuals whose souls are fused with that of their country, both ravaged and beautiful…. Ryman - best known as a fantasy writer but one who proved his power as an author of nuanced, rich historical fiction in the unsung novel "Was" - has not so much created as revealed a world in which the promise of redemption takes seed even in horror." —Boston Globe

"The novel conveys not merely a story, but the light and darkness, despair and hope, tradition and Westernization that is Cambodia itself.... While peaceful William, war-consumed Map, and Cambodia-loving Luc could easily be flat, typecast characters, Ryman steers clear of such simplifications. Their interwoven histories are at times noble and at times horrifying, laced with profound emotions and punctuated with atrocities....
