Changing default Khmer system fonts on Windows 8.1

Khmer UI was first introduced in Windows Vista and has served since then as the default Khmer fonts for the Windows User Interface.

Khmer UI

Due to the its difficult legibility, the team behind Khmer Unicode (NiDA) introduced Khmer fonts fixer for Windows Vista and Windows 7 (which should also work for Windows 8) in order to replace Khmer UI fonts with Khmer OS Sytem font.

However, in Windows 8, this method doesn't work anymore most likely due to Microsoft's deeper integration of system fonts. In fact, Microsoft has used another font which is actually a combination of three typefaces: Thai, Lao and Khmer. The result font file is called Leelawadee UI (which can be found in the Fonts folder in Windows).

Therefore, to replace Khmer UI typeface with Khmer OS System typeface, I tried modifying Khmer OS System with respect to the three font files of Leelawadee UI (LeelawUI.ttf, LeelUIsl.ttf, LeelaUIb.ttf). After that, all there is to do is installing the three modified fonts (the process will ask to replace the three existing fonts), logging out, and you'll see the results after logging in.

I don't know see how this affects the Thai and Lao typefaces for the UI because they were not included in Khmer OS System font, but I haven't see any noticeable errors by typing Thai in Chrome's address bar (which should use UI fonts).

I provide the link below for all those who would like to change Khmer default fonts on Windows 8.1. What will Microsoft do with Khmer fonts in the next Windows? Only they know...

  1. I really hate this font! Khmer UI and Leelawadee UI are the most ugly fonts ever made. It probably was made by a team who doesn't know Khmer. Is there any way to make a petition to Microsoft to split this system font in to three separate fonts? Thai Lao Khmer. And ask Khmer team to develop Khmer Font, Thai team to develop Thai font and Lao team to develop Lao font. Thanks again for your solution. Still don't understand why people don't complain to Microsoft.

    1. I'm guessing they're making Khmer font like that to keep a consistent UI with English font, but I say they're just lazy. They could have done a better job at it and made the font more beautiful + legible.

    1. Just select the three fonts, right-click on them and click Install and override the existing fonts. If you still get an error, send me the error message.
